I always get asked how we make it work or what kind of schedule we have for homeschooling. Honestly we don’t really have one. I mean the kids have a schedule of their individual work loads but we don’t really have a set start and finish time. We typically start school right after breakfast but that really all depends what time we wake up in the morning. I don’t set an alarm. Most mornings we wake up between 8 and 9:00am. We don’t rush breakfast the kids will watch a few cartoons as they eat. I always like to spend some time in the morning putting clean dishes away from the previous day and maybe throw in a load of laundry or fold a load that was in the dryer. When I’m ready, normally between 10-11:00am, I tell them to shut the TV off and make their way to the school room. Some days they fly through their work but most days we stop in the middle to take a break for lunch. Then some days we snack while we work.
I sometimes wish I could be more organized and on schedule. It’s not that I couldn’t set an alarm and keep us on a strict time schedule, it's just not how I like to do things. In the future me might try to be more on schedule if we ever decide to transition to school outside or home. But for now this relaxed homeschool schedule works for us..
Some days if we have too many things going on in the morning we will do school in the afternoon but that doesn’t seem to be easy on me or the kids. Both boys seem more engaged in the morning and less grouchy. Starting in the afternoon always causes melt downs, so we try to avoid it. Even as than have got older it still seems to be that they are more engaged in the morning and more alert.
As I said before the kids don’t have a scheduled end time it’s really just when their work load is completed for the day. Sometimes they fly through it but we typically spend about 4 hours doing school everyday. Which is the set standard for the state of Georgia. After school is free time. The boys will either choose TV time or ask to play on their tablets for a while or game console for a bit. I like to spend this time straightening up the school room and getting some things set up the next day. It's easier on me having everything ready for the next day. It means we can start as soon as possible the next day. The rest of my day is basically spent clean up the house, doing laundry, running errands, and getting dinner ready. At bed time I like to do some reading with the boys. I normally make both boys pick out one book they want to read to me and one they want me to read to them. Once we’re done they brush their teeth and off to bed to do it all over again tomorrow.
